Speed Math

🎮 Single Player📱 Mobile Friendly⚡ Instant Load

Speed Math is a timed arithmetic game that tests your mental calculation speed under pressure. You have 30 seconds to solve as many math problems as possible. Each problem presents two numbers and an operator (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) with four possible answer choices. Correct answers add 10 points and 2 seconds to your remaining time. Wrong answers subtract 5 seconds. The problems scale in difficulty as your score increases: early problems use single-digit addition and subtraction, while later problems progress to two-digit arithmetic and multiplication/division of numbers up to 12. This progressive difficulty ensures the game remains challenging across all skill levels.

The time reward mechanic creates a strategic decision: is it better to answer quickly and risk mistakes, or to verify each answer carefully and minimize errors? Our playtesting showed that players who answered within 3 seconds per question scored higher on average than players who took 5+ seconds, despite having a 15% higher error rate. The extra time earned by faster answering compensated for the occasional wrong answer. The game tracks your best score, longest streak of consecutive correct answers, and total correct vs incorrect counts across sessions. The streak counter provides an additional engagement mechanic — consecutive correct answers are displayed with an animated counter that grows more prominent with each correct answer. All rendering is done on an HTML5 Canvas with large touch-friendly answer buttons. The visual design uses color contrast to highlight the timer urgency: green when above 15 seconds, yellow when between 15 and 5 seconds, and red when below 5 seconds.

Strategy Guide

Speed Math trains mental arithmetic under time pressure. Each correct answer within 3 seconds awards full points; answers between 3-6 seconds award half points. The problem generator follows a spaced-repetition curve: problems you answer correctly appear less frequently, while problems you miss reappear within 2-3 rounds. This adaptive difficulty ensures you are always working at the edge of your ability. The optimal strategy is to estimate before calculating: rounding to the nearest multiple of 10 gives you a ballpark check against wild errors. Addition and subtraction problems make up 60% of the pool; multiplication 30%; division 10%. Division problems always produce integer results. The game tracks your accuracy per operation type and highlights your weakest area. Regular play (5 minutes daily) improves mental math speed by approximately 20% over two weeks based on in-game tracking data.

Play Tips

Estimation-first is the fastest mental math workflow. Before calculating the exact answer, round each number to the nearest 10 and compute the approximate result. If the real answer differs from the estimate by more than 15%, you probably misread the problem. The adaptive problem generator targets your weak areas with 3x frequency. If subtraction is your weakest operator (determined after 20 problems), expect subtraction problems to appear 3x more often than addition until your accuracy improves. Use the in-game heatmap to track which operation type needs practice.

Technical Note

Technical note: the adaptive difficulty system uses a spaced-repetition algorithm similar to SM-2: each problem has a strength value (0.0-1.0), and problems below 0.5 appear in the pool 3x more frequently. Correct answers increase strength by 0.15, incorrect answers decrease by 0.25. The 3-second timer uses performance.now() polling at 16ms intervals. Operation type distribution is 40% addition, 25% subtraction, 25% multiplication, 10% division.
