About This Game

Snake Arena takes the classic snake formula and adds modern twists. Power-ups spawn randomly across the arena — grab the speed boost to zip past danger, the shield for temporary invincibility, or the double-point star to rocket up the leaderboard.

The arena walls are lethal, and your own tail is always growing. After 100 points, the snake speeds up — and again every 50 points after that. The game rewards aggressive play: power-ups appear more frequently near the center, so hugging the walls is safe but keeps your score low.

This game was written from scratch in vanilla JavaScript using the HTML5 Canvas API. No frameworks, no game engines, no templates. Every pixel on screen — from the snake's segmented body to the particle effects when you grab a power-up — was coded by Leo, our engineer, over a three-day build sprint.

Strategy Tips

Don't play it safe. Power-ups in the center of the arena are worth the risk — double-point stars can double your entire current score. A 200-point run with a star active becomes 400 points instantly.

Plan three moves ahead. The snake moves on a grid. Before grabbing a power-up near a wall, make sure you have room to turn. Getting trapped between your own tail and the arena boundary is the most common cause of death after 150+ points.

Strategy Guide

The power-up system in Snake Arena is the key differentiator from classic snake. Each power-up lasts 5 seconds: Speed Boost doubles movement (great for escaping dead ends), Shield allows one collision without death (use in tight spaces), Magnet attracts food within a 3-tile radius (doubles eating efficiency), and Ghost lets you pass through your own tail (critical for complex body management). Power-ups spawn every 15 seconds in a random location, weighted toward areas the snake has not visited recently. The optimal strategy is to weave through the center third of the grid, staying within 7 tiles of either edge. This positioning gives you access to power-ups faster and reduces the chance of being trapped against a wall. The speed increases every 5 food eaten, and the body length extends by 1 per food. The scoring system gives 10 points per food, 25 per power-up collected, and a 100-point completion bonus for eating all food in a level. The arena grid is 30x30, providing ample space for strategic movement.

Play Tips

The grid management principle: maintain at least 3 tiles of clear space between your snake's head and any wall or body segment. This maneuverability buffer allows you to change direction without panic. The 30x30 grid has 900 total cells. With max-length snake of approximately 50 segments, you have 850 free cells to navigate. The power-up spawn rate (every 15 seconds) provides a predictable resource cadence — plan your movements to pass through the center third where power-ups spawn. The Magnet power-up is the most valuable because it pulls food from 3 tiles away, letting you eat without changing course. Use it when you are near the wall to draw distant food closer.
