2048 Puzzle brings the classic number-merging puzzle to the browser with a clean, dark-themed interface optimized for both desktop and mobile play. The game presents a 4x4 grid where you slide numbered tiles in four directions. When two tiles with the same number collide during a slide, they merge into a single tile whose value is the sum of the two original numbers. The objective is to create a tile with the number 2048. After each move, a new tile appears in a random empty cell — usually a 2 (90% probability) or occasionally a 4 (10% probability).

The game requires strategic planning: you cannot simply slide tiles randomly and expect to reach 2048. The most effective strategy is the "corner strategy": keep your highest-value tile in one corner (typically the bottom-left) and only move tiles in two directions (left and down). This prevents your largest tile from getting stuck in the middle of the grid where it blocks merges. We tuned the tile appearance probabilities and the grid size to match the original game's balance — about 4% of games are solvable to 2048 with optimal play, giving the game enough difficulty to remain engaging. The score is calculated as the sum of all merged tile values, and your best score is saved to localStorage. The game uses arrow keys on desktop and swipe gestures on mobile, with smooth CSS transition animations that make each merge feel satisfying.

Strategy Guide

2048 the number-merging puzzle to its core strategy. The optimal approach is the corner strategy: keep your highest tile in one corner (bottom-right recommended), and never move tiles upward or leftward unless absolutely necessary. This creates a cascade where large tiles accumulate in the corner and small tiles fill the remaining space. The 2048 tile is achievable in approximately 250-350 moves using this strategy. The game generates new tiles as either 2 (90% chance) or 4 (10% chance), so a high-value tile chain from a 4 tile is rare but game-changing. The undo button (limited to 3 per game) allows recovery from accidental moves. The merge animation timing was tuned to 200ms — fast enough to keep the game flowing, slow enough for the player to register the merge. The scoring system awards the value of each merged tile, meaning a single 2048 merge is worth 2048 points plus the sum of all merges leading to it.

Play Tips

The corner strategy works best when you pick a corner and NEVER move your largest tile out of it. If your largest tile is in the bottom-right, never swipe down (moves your tile further down, can't escape) or right (same problem). Only swipe up and left to bring new tiles into play while the large tile stays put. If you accidentally move the large tile out of the corner, you have about 10 moves to reposition it before the board becomes unsolvable. The 2048 tile (2^11) requires at minimum 2048 total points from merges, achievable in about 280 moves with optimal play.
